mission
We’re on a mission to build an open-source, collaborative, and economically empowering internet. We are creating community and infrastructure for Web 3 — a diverse range of tools, technologies, and networks that enable people to work for the open internet.
current challenges
The future of Gitcoin should continue our path towards more scale & more decentralization. The world needs public goods now more than ever. We hear this from our community each and every day.
culture & values
- Open Internet
We represent the spirit of the open web, with P2P communities building open source code, sharing open data, and adopting open governance.
- Open Source
The world runs on open source protocols. On Gitcoin, open source builders earn while working in a culture of collaboration.
- Open Economies
Build open Web3 technologies that support the goals of financial freedom, shared ownership, and collaborative determination.
history
Open source has been the vanguard of technological advancement, creating over $500 billion in yearly economic output. However, there is a vast disparity between the monetary value that open source provides and developers' income. With the mission to close this gap, Gitcoin was founded by Kevin Owocki, Scott Moore, and Vivek Singh in November 2017 and joined Consensys as one of the portfolio projects.
In 2018, we launched Gitcoin Hackathons and Gitcoin Grants Round 1 with a $25k matching pool 8. The next several years were a tooth & nail fight for growth & budget. In January 2021, we were able to raise $11m from one of the top funds in the space and spin out of Consensys to become an independent company Gitcoin Holdings.
May 25, 2021, was a day that would change Gitcoin forever. It was the day that we retroactively airdropped GTC to the community and launched GitcoinDAO. We launched new tools like decentralized Grants Alpha and the Steward Report Cards.
Since its launch 11 in November 2017, Gitcoin has helped 59,956 funders reach an audience of 262,688 earners. Gitcoin has facilitated 1,572,067 complete transactions to 9,700 unique earners. GitcoinDAO is still evolving & emerging.
